Random glucose test is a blood sugar test taken from a non-fasting subject. Several random measurements may be taken throughout the day. Random testing is useful because glucose levels in healthy people do not vary widely throughout the day. Blood glucose levels that vary widely may mean a problem. This test assumes a recent meal and therefore has higher reference values than the fasting glucose test. INCREASED in diabetes and some adrenal, thyroid, and pituitary disorders. DECREASED in insulin excess and in some types of glycogen storage disease. See Fasting Blood Sugar (Glucose), Serum
