Fibrinogen is a glycoprotein synthesized in the liver and by megakaryocytes. Increased levels are associated with inflammation, diabetes and obesity. Levels can fall if it is being heavily consumed, as in conditions like diffuse intravascular coagulation. Congenital afibrinogenemia is very unusual but there are patients with hypofibrinogenemia who are prone to hemorrhage (the severity of the bleeding symptoms is directly related to the plasma concentration of fibrinogen). Defective fibrinogen (inherited) may be suspected when a normal or nearly normal absolute fibrinogen concentration is measured in a patient whose blood takes longer than normal to clot. Bleeding symptoms (usually minor) and sometimes a tendency to thrombosis may be associated with defective fibrinogen.
