The indirect Coombs’ test looks for circulating antibodies in the blood directed against red blood cells (RBCs). This test is used to detect in-vitro antibody-antigen reactions. It is mostly done prior to a blood transfusion, also to screen pregnant women for antibodies that may cause hemolytic disease of the newborn, and used for compatibility testing, antibody identification, RBC phenotyping, and titration studies.
