Thyroglobulin is a protein produced only in the thyroid gland epithelial cells. Iodine combines with the amino acid tyrosine, which is present in thyroglobulin to produce two thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones are necessary in almost all metabolic activities of the body. Antibodies against thyroglobulin are found in subjects with various thyroid disorders such as Hashimotos disease, Graves disease and thyroid cancer.
