ASO is an antibody targeted against streptolysin O; a toxin secreted by Group A streptococci (usually those causing nasopharyngeal infections) or certain Group C and G strains. This test is ordered if a person presents with symptoms suggesting rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis and has had a recent history of sore throat or a confirmed streptococcal infection. I.e. If symptoms of rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis are present, an elevated ASO level may be used to help confirm the diagnosis. HIGH levels of these antibodies are strongly suggestive of post-streptococcal sequelae. Sera from patients with hyperlipidemia or liver disease may give false positive results.
