Islet cell antibodies (ICA) have been associated with “autoimmune” endocrine disorders and insulin-dependent diabetes.  This disorder is characterized by the presence of antibodies in patients that may be detected years before the onset of the clinical symptoms. Two auto-antigens recognized by ICA were identified; Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase (GAD) 65 and tyrosine phosphatase-like molecule (IA-2). Around 70-80% of diagnosed type 1 diabetes patients have autoantibodies against GAD65 and/or IA-2, making ICA testing a useful tool in the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes
