Amylase is a polysaccharide-hydrolyzing enzyme secreted in the pancreas and salivary glands. This test is sometimes used to monitor treatment of some cancers involving the pancreas and after removal of gallstones that have caused gallbladder attacks. HIGH levels are found in acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, mumps, pulmonary inflammation, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, and intestinal obstruction. DECREASED levels of amylase may indicate permanent damage to the amylase-producing cells in the pancreas. Related tests: Amylase, Spot Urine
