This test serves as a biomarker to detect a subset of tumors, principally hepatocellular carcinoma and endodermal sinus tumors. HIGH levels are found in Hodgkins disease, lymphoma, brain tumors, renal cell cancer, and other types of cancer. Occasional elevations have also been found in chronic active hepatitis, and cirrhosis.
