Rotavirus is a genus of double-stranded RNA virus in the family Reoviridae. It is the leading cause of severe diarrhea among infants and young children. Rotaviral diarrhea may be severe resulting in dehydration and disturbance of the bodys normal electrolyte balance. Diagnosis of rotaviral gastroenteritis is based on the presence of rotavirus particles in stool. Adenovirus is a medium-sized, non-enveloped, icosahedral virus composed of a nucleocapsid and a double-stranded linear DNA genome. It is the second most frequently detected viral agent in childhood gastroenteritis (serotypes 40 and 41). Adenovirus and Rotavirus are both used in the diagnosis of gastro-enteritis in infants and young children. See Adenovirus Antibodies, IgG and IgM, Serum
