17-Hydroxyprogesterone is a steroid produced in both gonads and adrenal glands. It is derived primarily from Progesterone and 17-Hydroxypregnenolone. Measurement of 17-Hydroxyprogesterone is useful in the evaluation of patients with suspected congenital adrenal hyperplasia, as the enzymes that are defective lead to a build-up of 17-Hydroxyprogesterone. It can also be used to measure the contribution of progestational activity of the corpus luteum during pregnancy. HIGH levels of 17-Hydroxyprogesterone are seen in patients with Polycystic Ovarian Disease, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or idiopathic hirsutism. See also 17-Hydroxypregnenolone, Serum.
